Registered Nurse – OR

Schedule: 7am – 3:30pm, Monday through Friday

Overview: The OR Nurse performs various clinical activities related to the care of patients in the operating room and collaborates with other clinical personnel to prepare the operating room for surgery.

Reports to: Director of Nursing

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Respond to direction and requests from the practitioner, anesthesia personnel and other clinical personnel.
  2. Participate in preparing supplies, suture and other items needed for dental and surgical procedures.
  3. Collaborate with other clinical personnel in preparing the OR for cases.
  4. Verify patient identification in the OR.
  5. Maintain a sterile field as appropriate.
  6. Prepare solutions and other items used during dental and surgical procedures.
  7. Perform appropriate counts with the technician or nurse as appropriate.
  8. Prepare surgical specimens and associated documentation for pick up by pathology service.
  9. Collaborate with Central Processing personnel to clean and sterilize instruments.
  10. Notify the Director of Nursing of supply needs, instruments that need repair and/or other problems with equipment or supplies.
  11. Maintain knowledge for safe and effective use of various pieces of equipment used in the OR, including, but not limited to pulse oximeter, OR tables, sterilizers, cardiac monitors and defibrillator.
  12. Record changes on the practitioner’s preference card.
  13. Maintain accurate, complete medical record documents as they apply to intraoperative care; use and enter data in the Center’s information system.
  14. Inspect and rotate sterile supplies.
  15. Clean and stock the OR as necessary.
  16. Serve on Center committees as requested by the Director of Nursing.
  17. Adhere to all Center policies and procedures, including, without limitation, those relating to HIPPA (patient privacy) and the Patient Safety Act.
  18. Respond to Center emergencies as appropriate.
  19. Assure that emergency equipment is available and functioning.
  20. Exhibit a professional and courteous approach to all patients, practitioners, colleagues and visitors.
  21. Use supplies in a cost-effective manner.
  22. Arrive for duty promptly.
  23. Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Graduate of accredited school of nursing: valid, current PA license.
  3. Previous OR experience, preferably in an ambulatory setting.

Other Qualifications and Consideration

  1. Occasional need to lift heavy objects and assist in lifting patients; duties require twisting, reaching and pushing objects from light to heavy weights.
  2. Good interpersonal communication skills.
  3. Ability to read, write and speak English.
  4. Protentional exposure to disruptive or uncontrollable patients or visitors.
  5. Handle potentially dangerous materials.
  6. May have unanticipated need to work overtime.
  7. Ability to handle multiple task concurrently.
  8. Frequent need to stand/walk for long periods of time.
  9. Current Pennsylvania nursing license.
  10. BLS and/or ACLS and/or PALS certification as required by Director of Nursing.
